Crop an image to a 1:1 square

A 1:1 image has the same width and height, such as 1080 × 1080 px for an Instagram square or 400 × 400 px for a profile picture. Crop any photo to a square below, or fit the whole picture onto a square canvas without losing anything.

Square sizes worth knowing

Size a square for the largest place it will be shown. 400 × 400 covers most avatars, 1080 × 1080 is the Instagram square, 2000 × 2000 gives online shops enough pixels for their zoom view, and 3000 × 3000 is what music distributors ask for on album artwork. The tool exports any of these, or keeps the full resolution of your crop.

Profile pictures are where the numbers vary most. These are the upload sizes listed on each platform's page here:

Platform Profile picture Shown as
Instagram 320 × 320 110 px circle
YouTube 800 × 800 Circle
Facebook 720 × 720 Circle
TikTok 720 × 720 Circle
Discord 512 × 512 Circle
LinkedIn 400 × 400 Circle
Twitch 256 × 256 Circle

Most squares end up as circles

Almost every platform takes a square upload and displays it as a circle, which hides the corners, about 21% of the image. Keep the face in the middle with some room above the head, and keep text away from the corners. On each platform's size page, such as Discord banner size, the profile picture preset has a circle preview so you can see the result before you download.

Does Instagram still use square posts?

It does. 1080 × 1080 still uploads and shows in full in the feed. What changed is the profile grid: since 2025 it shows every post as a 3:4 tile, so a square post appears on your profile trimmed to its middle 810 px. If the grid matters to you, a 3:4 post at 1080 × 1440 fits it exactly. The Instagram post size page has both presets.

Making a square without cropping

A wide landscape or a tall portrait loses a lot when it's cut to 1:1. Fit whole image puts the entire picture inside the square and fills the rest:

  • White for product photos, since marketplaces often want a plain white background
  • Blur for social posts, so the bars look like part of the picture
  • Black or a custom color to match a brand or a dark feed
  • Transparent for logos and stickers (PNG or WebP; JPG can't store transparency)

How to crop to a square

  1. Drop an image, paste it with Cmd/Ctrl+V, or load the sample.
  2. Drag the image to choose what sits in the square, pinch or scroll to zoom, and use the arrow keys to nudge. Turn on the rule-of-thirds grid if you're placing a subject off-center.
  3. Choose full resolution or one of the common sizes. If the export would be enlarged, the tool tells you.
  4. Choose JPG, PNG or WebP, check the file size, and download or copy.

Choosing the format

JPG is right for photos and accepted everywhere. PNG is better for logos, screenshots, pixel art and anything that needs transparency. WebP is smaller than both at similar quality and works well on websites, though some upload forms still refuse it.

For other shapes, the crop page has 4:5, 3:4, 2:3, 9:16 and more.
