Twitter header size in pixels
| Image | Pixels | Ratio | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Header (banner) | 1500 × 500 | 3:1 | JPG, PNG or static GIF |
| Profile photo | 400 × 400 | 1:1 | Shown as a circle |
| Post image | 1600 × 900 | 16:9 | Shown uncropped as a single image |
| Square post image | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 | Takes more of the timeline |
X has changed its stated file limits more than once, and guides quote anything from 2 MB to 10 MB for headers. The tool keeps both the header and the profile photo under 2 MB, which fits all of them; a 1500 × 500 JPG rarely needs more than 500 KB anyway.
Twitter header dimensions and safe area
The header is shown at 3:1 everywhere, but not every pixel survives:
- The profile photo sits over the lower left. On a 1500 px wide header it covers roughly a 334 px circle starting about 40 px from the left, overlapping the bottom third and hanging below it.
- The top and bottom ~60 px can be cut depending on the screen and app, which leaves roughly 1500 × 380 that always shows.
- Phones show it small. The whole banner is about 400 px wide on a phone, so lettering needs to be large.
X doesn't publish these overlays. They were measured from the site and apps, and the tool marks them as approximate.
How to resize an image for a Twitter header
- Drop an image above, paste it with Cmd/Ctrl+V, or load the sample.
- The header preset opens with the safe band and the profile photo overlay.
- Drag and zoom until your text sits in the middle band, clear of the circle. A photo wider than 3:1 crops cleanly; a tall photo keeps only a slice, so choose it or use Fit whole image with a fill.
- Download. The file is made in your browser and kept under 2 MB.
Why your Twitter header is cropped
The header is a strict 3:1 strip. Upload any other shape and X crops it to the middle, often cutting heads and text. Upload exactly 1500 × 500 and nothing is cropped, apart from the thin top and bottom strips some screens hide.
Why your Twitter header looks blurry
- The source was smaller than 1500 px wide, so X enlarged it.
- Fine text in a heavily compressed JPG. X recompresses headers. Export at high quality, or as PNG for flat graphics with lettering.
- Reusing a banner from another site. A 1584 × 396 LinkedIn banner or an 851 × 315 Facebook cover is a different shape, so X crops and scales it. Make a version at 1500 × 500 from the original image.
Other X image sizes
The profile photo is 400 × 400 and shown as a circle; keep the face centered. Single images in standard shapes such as 16:9 and 1:1 show uncropped in the timeline. Posts with several images are shown as a grid of cropped tiles, so keep the subject of each one centered. Sizes verified in October 2026. Similar banners: LinkedIn and YouTube.
