YouTube banner size in pixels
| Area | Pixels | Where it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Full upload | 2560 × 1440 | TVs show all of it |
| Minimum upload | 2048 × 1152 | Smallest YouTube accepts |
| Desktop strip | 2560 × 423 | Rows 508 to 931 |
| Tablet strip | 1855 × 423 | Starts 352 px from the left |
| Safe area | 1546 × 423 | Starts 507 px from the left; visible everywhere |
The file has to be the full 16:9 canvas even though most screens show a thin strip of it. The limit is 6 MB in JPG, PNG, BMP or static GIF.
YouTube banner dimensions on each device
You upload one 16:9 image and YouTube shows a different slice of it on each kind of device. These areas come from YouTube's own banner template. The vertical band is the same everywhere: rows 508 to 931, the middle 423 px. A narrow desktop browser window shows less than the full width, but the safe area always stays in view. The tool draws all three outlines on the banner preset.
A layout that works on every device:
- Center the channel name, logo and tagline inside the 1546 × 423 safe area.
- Use the space between the safe area and the tablet outline for supporting graphics that can disappear on phones.
- Fill the full 2560 × 1440 with something sensible, because TVs show all of it. A plain color or a blurred continuation of the photo works; a stretched logo doesn't.
- Make text big. On a phone the 1546 px safe area is squeezed onto a screen about 400 px wide, so lettering under about 60 px tall in the file ends up smaller than body text.
More layout examples are in the YouTube banner safe area guide.
2560 × 1440 vs 2048 × 1152
Both are 16:9 and both are accepted. 2048 × 1152 is the floor: anything smaller is rejected. 2560 × 1440 is what YouTube recommends and what TVs display, so a 2048 px banner gets enlarged on big screens. Start from an image at least 2560 px wide when you can; the tool warns you before it exports an upscaled banner.
How to resize an image for a YouTube banner
- Drop your image above, paste it with Cmd/Ctrl+V, or start from the sample.
- The channel banner preset opens with the device outlines on. Drag and zoom until the important part sits inside the dashed safe area.
- If you only have a wide strip (say 2560 × 423), choose Fit whole image with a blur or solid fill to make up the height.
- Download. The export is kept under 6 MB automatically and never leaves your browser.
Why your YouTube banner is cut off on mobile
Phones show only the middle 1546 × 423 px. Text near the left or right edge, or above row 508 and below row 931, is cropped away. Move it inside the safe area outline and it shows on every device.
Why your YouTube banner looks blurry
- The source was smaller than 2560 px wide, so YouTube enlarged it for big screens.
- Small text in a JPG. Fine lettering softens after YouTube recompresses it. Make text larger or export lettering-heavy banners as PNG, which the tool still keeps under 6 MB.
- A screenshot or a downloaded social image as the source. Those are already compressed; start from the original file.
The other YouTube images
The profile picture is 800 × 800 px, shown as a circle, under 4 MB. For video thumbnails YouTube now recommends 3840 × 2160 px (16:9, at least 640 px wide), up to 50 MB from a computer but only 2 MB from the YouTube app, so there's also a 1280 × 720 preset kept under 2 MB. The length badge covers the bottom-right corner, so keep faces and words away from it. All three presets are on this page; for other 16:9 work use the 16:9 cropper. Sizes verified in October 2026; other platforms are on the social media image sizes cheat sheet.
