Instagram profile picture size in pixels
| What | Size |
|---|---|
| File to upload | 320 × 320 px or a larger square (1:1) |
| Circle on your profile, phone | About 110 px |
| Circle on your profile, computer | About 150 px |
| Next to your posts and comments | About 32 px |
Instagram's Help Center doesn't publish a profile photo size. 320 × 320 px is the size Instagram has long served profile photos at: anything larger is scaled down, anything smaller is enlarged and looks soft. The on-screen sizes are approximate and change a little from phone to phone. Checked in October 2026.
320 × 320 or bigger
320 × 320 is enough for Instagram itself. A bigger square doesn't hurt, because Instagram scales it down, and it gives you one file you can reuse elsewhere. That's what the 1080 × 1080 preset is for: the same circle with more pixels, ready for YouTube (800 × 800), TikTok (720 × 720) or X (400 × 400).
Going smaller is where trouble starts. A face cropped out of a group photo or a screenshot is often only 150 or 200 px wide, and Instagram enlarges it. The tool warns you when your crop is smaller than the export.
Framing for a circle
The circle hides about a fifth of the square, all of it in the corners. What works:
- Faces: head and a bit of shoulder, with the eyes about a third of the way down. Leave a little room above the hair so the circle doesn't clip it.
- Logos: shrink the mark to about 70–80% of the width so letters stay clear of the curve. A wordmark that fills the square loses its first and last letters.
- Background: plain or blurred, with contrast against both Instagram's white and dark themes.
- Story ring: when you have an active story, Instagram draws a colored ring around the picture and shrinks it slightly, so detail at the edge gets even tighter.
Both profile presets open with the circle preview on, so you see exactly what Instagram will cut.
Profile picture vs highlight covers
The row of circles under your bio are highlight covers. They're circles too, shown smaller than the profile picture, and work best as a simple icon in the middle of a 1080 × 1080 square. The preset is on this page; the story and Reel sizes behind them are on the Instagram story size page.
How to change your Instagram profile picture
- Drop your photo above or paste it with Cmd/Ctrl+V.
- The 320 × 320 preset opens with the circle preview. Drag and zoom until the face or logo sits in the middle.
- Download the square.
- In Instagram, open your profile, tap Edit profile, then Edit picture, and choose the file. Because it's already square, Instagram's own crop has nothing left to cut; just confirm it.
Why your Instagram profile picture looks bad
- Blurry: the crop was smaller than 320 px, usually from a group photo or a screenshot. Start from the original photo.
- Head or letters cut off: the subject reached the corners of the square. Zoom out until it fits inside the circle preview.
- Off-center: you uploaded a rectangle and Instagram picked the square for you. Crop it square here first.
- Muddy colors or blocky edges: the source had already been compressed by a messaging app. Use the camera original.
The same picture everywhere
Every platform shows profile pictures as circles now, at different sizes. Start from one well-framed 1080 × 1080 square and export each size from it, or use the square cropper for any other 1:1 job. Sizes verified in October 2026; the full list is on the social media image sizes cheat sheet, and feed posts are on the Instagram post size page.
