Compress to a file size

Compress an image to 200 KB

Drop your images below and each one comes out at 200 KB or less (200,000 bytes at most), at the highest quality that fits. That is enough for a sharp 1200 px portrait or a readable page scan, and the files never leave your device.

Where 200 KB limits come from

Form Photo limit Also required
US visa photo 240 KB or less, JPEG Square, 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 px
NEET (UG) passport-size photo 10 to 200 KB, JPG See the current information bulletin

200 KB clears the US limit with room to spare. For a US visa photo, the passport photo tool already crops to 600 × 600 px with the head-size guides and keeps the file under 240 KB, so you don't need this page as well.

Plenty of exam and recruitment portals use a 200 KB cap for photos and supporting documents too. They usually state a minimum and the accepted formats in the same place; read the whole line before you upload.

What 200 KB holds

In our tests, at good JPEG quality:

Image Largest size that fits in 200 KB
Headshot on a plain background about 1400 × 1400 px
Portrait with a busy background about 1200 × 1200 px
Detailed outdoor photo about 1100 × 730 px
A4 page of text, scanned about 850 × 1200 px (100 dpi); 1240 px (150 dpi) if the paper scans clean and white

Document scans under 200 KB

A page of text is harder to compress than a photo of a face, because every letter is an edge. What helps:

  • Crop to the page. Desk, fingers and shadow around the paper all cost bytes.
  • Light it evenly. A phone's document scan mode (the Notes app on iPhone, Google Drive on Android) turns the paper white, and white paper is nearly free.
  • Pick the resolution on purpose. Enter 850 as the max width for an A4 page at about 100 dpi, or 1240 for about 150 dpi. Normal-sized text stays readable at 100 dpi; small print needs 150.
  • Compress each page separately. The tool handles a whole stack at once and keeps every file under the limit.

If the form wants a PDF rather than an image, this tool isn't the right one: it exports JPG or WebP.

Why the photo looks soft after compressing

  • It was scaled down. If even low quality couldn't reach 200 KB, the tool shrank the picture; the result shows "resized". Crop away background, or set a max width yourself so you decide the size.
  • The source was already compressed. Screenshots and images saved from social apps carry artifacts that get worse on every save. Use the original file.
  • It's noisy. Low-light phone photos are full of grain, and grain eats bytes. A daylight photo of the same subject compresses far better.

How to compress to 200 KB

  1. Drop your images or scans.
  2. 200 KB is already selected. Set a max width if the form gives one.
  3. Check each file's size, dimensions and quality before downloading.
  4. Download them individually or as a zip.

For tighter limits use 100 KB or 50 KB; for web pages, 500 KB. Everything runs in your browser.
