What 500 KB holds
In our tests, at good JPEG quality:
| Image | Largest size that fits in 500 KB |
|---|---|
| Detailed outdoor photo | about 1920 × 1280 px |
| Portrait or product shot on a plain backdrop | 2560 px wide and more |
| Smooth image (sky, gradients, studio light) | about 4000 px wide |
A photo straight from a phone camera (4032 × 3024, often 2 to 5 MB) only fits at full size if the scene is simple. A busy scene gets scaled down to roughly 2000 to 2500 px wide, which is still wider than a laptop screen.
500 KB for website images
- Big originals are wasted. WordPress has scaled any upload larger than 2560 px down to 2560 px since version 5.3, and visitors' screens show far less. Uploading 12-megapixel originals only costs storage and page speed.
- Hero vs inline images. A full-width banner at 1920 to 2560 px fits in 500 KB. Images inside an article are shown 700 to 1200 px wide, so they belong under 200 KB.
- WebP is smaller. At the same quality WebP files are noticeably lighter than JPG, and WordPress has accepted WebP uploads since version 5.8. Switch the format in the tool if your site builder takes it.
- Set the width yourself. Enter 1920 or 2560 as the max width and the tool spends all 500 KB on quality at that size.
500 KB for email
Gmail lets you attach up to 25 MB per message, and many other providers allow less. Ten phone photos at 3 to 5 MB each don't fit, while ten 500 KB photos come to 5 MB and still look sharp full-screen. Compress the batch here, download them as a zip and attach the zip or the files.
Upload forms with a 500 KB cap
Some application portals cap photos or supporting documents at 500 KB. At this size the cap rarely forces a visible compromise, so if a form still refuses the file the reason is usually something else:
- Format: many forms take JPG only, and some accept PDF but not WebP.
- Pixel size: a required width or a maximum like 2000 px. Set it as the max width.
- Counting: the file is at most 500,000 bytes, which also passes forms that count 1 KB as 1,024 bytes.
How to compress to 500 KB
- Drop your photos, a whole folder's worth if you like.
- 500 KB is already selected. Add a max width for web use.
- Check the size, dimensions and quality of each result.
- Download one by one or all together as a zip.
Your photos are processed in your browser and never uploaded. For bigger allowances there are 1 MB and 2 MB targets.
